    Choose your PDFs

Pick one or more PDFs from your device, or drag them in. They load straight into your browser's memory — they are never sent anywhere.

  3. 02

    Choose what to export

Pick TXT or Word, then click the pages you want in the preview, or use All, Odd, Even, First, Last or a list like 2-5. With nothing picked, every page is exported. Choose Paragraphs for flowing text or Keep Lines to keep every line break, and add page labels if you want to see where each page began. Picked pages get a green frame and the pages left out look faded.

How it works

  • Choose one or more PDFs, then pick your format and pages. Nothing is processed until you click Export Text.
  • Click a page in the preview to pick it, and click it again to drop it. On a computer, drag a box across several pages to pick them all. Each PDF keeps its own picks, while the quick buttons and the typed pages pick in every PDF. Clicking a lit quick button again clears the picks. Pages you click count as a Custom choice, so they show in the box as a list such as 1-3, 5, as long as every PDF has the same picks.
  • Picked pages get a green frame, and pages left out look faded. With See All Pages unticked, a note tells you when the page you are looking at is not exported. The thumbnail opens on the first page that will be exported.
  • The text is read from the PDF itself, page by page, so no page is turned into an image and nothing is guessed. Text that is not really in the PDF, such as the words in a scanned photo, cannot be exported.
  • Each PDF gives its own file, named after the PDF unless you change File Name, with a .txt or .docx ending. The card shows its size and the Total panel shows the words exported.
  • See All Pages is ticked by default, so every page of each PDF shows as a grid of small thumbnails. Use the two icons beside it to switch to a vertical list of large pages, which opens at 150% zoom on a computer and fits the screen on a phone. Change the zoom with the + and − buttons.
  • Untick See All Pages to show each PDF as one small thumbnail instead.
  • With two or more PDFs added, the Jump to PDF menu above the files shows which PDF you are on and scrolls straight to the one you pick.
  • Download one file on its own, or all of them together as a ZIP.
  • Nothing is uploaded. Once the page has loaded, it keeps working offline.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is my PDF uploaded anywhere? No. The text is read and the TXT or Word file is built entirely in your browser. Your PDF is never sent to a server, so it stays private.
  • Can I export only some pages? Yes. Click pages in the preview to pick them, or on a computer drag a box across several. Picked pages get a green frame and the rest look faded. Each PDF keeps its own picks. All, Odd, Even, First and Last pick those pages in every PDF, and you can type pages such as 2-5 or 1-3, 5, 8- in the box. Pages you click show in the box too, when every PDF has the same picks. With nothing picked, every page is exported.
  • What is the difference between TXT and Word? TXT is plain text that opens in any app on any device. Word is a standard .docx file that opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Apple Pages and LibreOffice, ready to edit. Both hold the text only.
  • Will the Word file look like my PDF? No. This tool exports the text, not the page design. Images, tables, columns, fonts, colours and headers come out as plain paragraphs in one font. If you need the original layout rebuilt in Word, use a PDF to Word converter instead.
  • Does it work on scanned PDFs? No. A scanned PDF is a picture of a page, with no real text inside, and this tool does not do OCR. If none of the chosen pages has real text, you get a message and no file. If only some do, the rest are left out and counted under Pages Without Text. You can test a PDF by trying to select a word on it in your PDF viewer.
  • Can I export several PDFs at once? Yes. Add as many PDFs as you like, and download them together as a ZIP or one at a time. Each PDF gives its own TXT or Word file, named after the PDF unless you change File Name, and the same format, page choice and layout apply to all of them.
  • What does Text Layout do? Paragraphs joins the lines of each paragraph into flowing text and starts a new paragraph where the PDF leaves a bigger gap, which suits articles, contracts and reports. Keep Lines keeps every line break exactly as it is in the PDF, which suits lists, tables, poems and code.
  • What are Page Labels? Choose Yes to add a line such as Page 3 before the text of each page, so you can see where each page began. In a Word file the labels are headings, so they also appear in Word's navigation pane. With No, the text of the pages simply runs on.
  • Why is the text in a strange order, or full of odd symbols? Text is read in the order the PDF stores it, which usually matches reading order but can differ on pages with several columns, sidebars or tables. A few PDFs also use fonts without proper text information, which can give odd symbols. Right-to-left and complex scripts may come out in the wrong order. Try Keep Lines to see the text as the PDF stores it.
  • Are accents and other languages kept? Yes, when the PDF stores them as real text. The file is saved as UTF-8, so accents, symbols and non-Latin scripts are kept. Common ligatures such as fi and fl are turned back into plain letters.
  • Are images, tables and links exported? No. Only the text is exported. Images and drawings are left out, a table becomes rows of text, and links are not carried over.
  • Which PDFs are not supported? Password-protected PDFs cannot be read. Scanned PDFs have no text to export.
  • Does it work offline? Yes. Once the page has loaded, it keeps working without an internet connection, and you can install it as an app from your browser.

What ends up in your file

  • Text only: the words of the pages you chose, in the order the PDF stores them. Images, drawings, colours, fonts, headers and page design are not exported.
  • TXT file: plain text saved as UTF-8, so accents, symbols and non-Latin scripts are kept. Pages are separated by a blank line.
  • Word file: a standard .docx file with one paragraph per block of text, in a plain Calibri style. It opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Apple Pages and LibreOffice, and you can restyle it as you like.
  • Paragraphs: lines that follow each other closely are joined into one paragraph, and a bigger gap starts a new one. A word split by a hyphen at the end of a line is joined back together when the next line starts with a lowercase letter.
  • Keep Lines: every line is kept exactly as the PDF breaks it. In a Word file each line is its own tightly spaced paragraph.
  • Page labels: a line such as Page 3 before each page. In a Word file the labels are headings, so Word's navigation pane lists them.
  • Letters: common ligatures such as fi and fl are turned back into plain letters, and soft hyphens and control characters are removed.
  • Pages without text: a page with no selectable text adds nothing to the file and is counted under Pages Without Text. If none of the chosen pages has text, no file is produced.
  • Left alone: your PDF is only read. It is never changed or saved again.

How to get the most out of it

  • Check your PDF has real text. Try selecting a word on a page in your PDF viewer. If you can't, the PDF is a scan and needs OCR first, which this tool does not do.
  • Use Paragraphs for reading and editing. It gives flowing text that is easy to paste into an email, a document or a translator.
  • Use Keep Lines for lists, tables and code. The line breaks stay as they are, so rows and bullet points don't run together.
  • Take only what you need. Click the pages you want, type a chapter such as 12-20, or use Odd and Even to take every other page.
  • Add page labels for quoting and checking. They make it easy to say where a passage came from, and in Word they work as a page-by-page outline.
  • Pick TXT to search or process the text. Plain text is the easiest format for search tools, spreadsheets and scripts.
  • Pick Word to edit and format. The text opens ready to restyle, with real paragraphs rather than one long line.
  • Check before you export. Switch See All Pages to the grid to see the framed and faded pages at a glance, so you know the right ones are included.
  • Do many at once. Add all your PDFs together and download them as one ZIP.
  • Know the limits. Password-protected PDFs can't be read, and columns, sidebars and tables can come out in a different order from how they look. Keep Lines shows the order the PDF stores.

How it compares with iLovePDF

  • Privacy: iLovePDF uploads your PDF to its servers and deletes it automatically after 2 hours. Here nothing is ever uploaded. Your PDF stays on your device.
  • What it makes: iLovePDF's PDF to Word tool is a converter that aims to rebuild the look of your PDF in a Word file. This tool exports the text only, as TXT or Word, so you get clean text without page design.
  • Scanned PDFs: iLovePDF offers OCR for scanned PDFs, with some OCR features reserved for paid plans. This tool has no OCR and only exports real text.
  • Page choice: here you can click the pages you want in a live preview, pick odd or even pages, or type a list, before you export.
  • Limits: this tool needs no account, has no daily limit and adds no watermark. Your device's memory is the only limit.
  • Offline: iLovePDF offers a separate desktop app for offline use. This page keeps working offline once it has loaded, and can be installed as an app from your browser.
  • What iLovePDF has that this doesn't: layout-matching conversion to Word, OCR, a large set of other PDF tools, and desktop and mobile apps. This page does one job only.

How it compares with other popular PDF to text and Word tools

  • Smallpdf: its PDF to Word converter works in the cloud and deletes files after one hour. OCR for scanned PDFs is a Pro feature. Here nothing is uploaded and there is no account to create.
  • Adobe Acrobat online: offers a free online PDF to Word converter that uploads your file and rebuilds it as an editable Word document. This tool is simpler and exports only the text, but your PDF never leaves your device.
  • PDF24: its online PDF to Text and PDF to Word converters run on its servers, and the tools are free and financed by advertising. Its free PDF24 Creator app works offline on a computer and also offers OCR.
  • The main difference: these sites process your PDF on their servers, so it has to be uploaded first. Here it is read inside your browser, which matters most for contracts, ID documents and other private files.
  • Trade-off: a converter keeps more of the original look, such as columns, tables and pictures, and some can read scanned pages. This tool gives you the text alone, and only from PDFs that contain real text.
  • Trade-off: a cloud service does the work on its own servers, so it can handle extremely large PDFs more easily. Here, very large files depend on your device's memory and may be slow on a phone.
  • Note: these details come from each service's public information as of October 2026 and can change.
