Pick one or more PDFs from your device, or drag them in. They load straight into your browser's memory — they are never sent anywhere.

  3. 02

    Design your watermark

Choose Text or Image. Set the size, opacity, rotation, position and layer, and pick which pages get it. The preview on each PDF updates as you change things, and See All Pages lets you check every page.

  4. 03

    Add the watermark and download

Click Add Watermark, then Download to save the watermarked PDF straight to your device. Text stays selectable and searchable. Change anything and the button goes back to Add Watermark, ready for another run.

  5. 04

    Watermark many PDFs at once

Choose several PDFs together, or tap ‘+ Add More’ to add others later. Click Add Watermark once and they all get the same watermark. Then click Download to save them all together as a ZIP. It’s super fast, simple, and private.

How it works

  • Choose one or more PDFs, then design your watermark. Nothing is processed until you click Add Watermark.
  • The preview on each PDF shows the watermark on the page you are looking at. With See All Pages unticked, each PDF shows one thumbnail with page arrows, and a note tells you when a page is outside your page choice. The thumbnail opens on the first page that gets the watermark.
  • Text and vector graphics are never turned into images, so the original text stays selectable and searchable.
  • Each result is checked against its original before you can download it. If anything differs, no file is produced for that PDF.
  • See All Pages is ticked by default, so every page of each PDF shows as a grid of small thumbnails. Use the two icons beside it to switch to a vertical list of large pages, which opens at 150% zoom on a computer and fits the screen on a phone. Change the zoom with the + and − buttons.
  • Untick See All Pages to show each PDF as one small thumbnail instead.
  • With two or more PDFs added, the Jump to PDF menu above the files shows which PDF you are on and scrolls straight to the one you pick.
  • Download one PDF on its own, or all of them together as a ZIP.
  • Nothing is uploaded. Once the page has loaded, it keeps working offline.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is my PDF uploaded anywhere? No. Watermarking runs entirely in your browser. Your file and your watermark image are never sent to a server, so they stay private.
  • Will the text stay selectable and searchable? Yes. Pages are never converted to images. The watermark is placed on top of, or behind, each page, while the original text and vector graphics are left untouched. The watermark itself is a sharp graphic, so it looks the same on every device.
  • Can I watermark several PDFs at once? Yes. Add as many PDFs as you like, and download them together as a ZIP or one at a time. The same watermark and page choice is applied to every file.
  • Can I use my logo as a watermark? Yes. Choose Image, then pick a PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF or BMP file. A PNG with a transparent background keeps its transparency, so only the logo shape is stamped.
  • Can I watermark only some pages? Yes. Choose All, Odd, Even, First or Last, or use Custom and type pages such as 1-3, 5, 8- to skip a cover page or stamp a section. Pages a file does not have are ignored.
  • What is the difference between over and behind the content? Over content places the watermark on top of the page, so it is always visible. Behind content places it underneath, so text stays in front, but pages with a solid background or full-page scan can hide it.
  • Which fonts can I use? The list contains common fonts that are installed on most devices. Because the watermark is drawn on your device and saved as a graphic, it looks identical wherever the PDF is opened.
  • Can a watermark be removed later? It becomes part of the page, so it cannot be switched off like a layer. A determined person with PDF editing tools may still be able to cover or remove it, so treat it as a clear label and deterrent, not as security.
  • Which PDFs are not supported? Password-protected PDFs cannot be processed. Digitally signed PDFs can be watermarked, but rewriting the file invalidates the signature.

What happens to your PDF

  • The watermark graphic: text is drawn on your device at four times its printed size, so it stays sharp when zoomed. An image is scaled down only if its longest side is over 2,400 pixels. It is stored once in the PDF and reused on every page, so the file grows by only a little.
  • Placement: positions are measured on the visible page, so cropped pages and pages that are rotated in the PDF get the watermark where the preview shows it.
  • Opacity and rotation: both are saved as standard PDF settings, so every PDF viewer shows the same result.
  • Layers: Over content adds the watermark after the page content. Behind content adds it before, and the page is left as it was.
  • Mosaic: copies are laid out in staggered rows across the page. A limit on the number of copies keeps very small watermarks from making the file heavy.
  • Left alone: text, fonts, photos and vector graphics are never touched. Links, bookmarks, forms and page sizes stay as they were.
  • Safety check: the result is opened again and compared with your original, covering text, page count, page size, rotation and links. If anything differs, no file is produced for that PDF.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep it readable. An opacity of 30 to 50 percent keeps the page easy to read and the watermark still clearly visible.
  • Match the job. Diagonal, centred text suits DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL. A small horizontal mark in a corner suits a copyright line or logo.
  • Use Mosaic to cover the page. Repeating the watermark makes it much harder to crop out. Raise Spacing for a lighter pattern.
  • Use a transparent PNG for logos. A file at least 800 pixels wide stays sharp, and transparency keeps the logo's own shape.
  • Choose the layer with care. Use Over content for scanned pages and pages with a solid background. Use Behind content when text must stay in front.
  • Skip pages you don't need. Choose Custom and type 2- to leave a cover page clean, or 1-3, 5 for a few pages.
  • Check before you download. Switch See All Pages to the vertical list and scroll through a few pages, especially pages with a different size or orientation.
  • Do many at once. Add all your PDFs together and download them as one ZIP.
  • Know the limits. Password-protected PDFs can't be watermarked, and digitally signed PDFs lose their signature when rewritten.

How it compares with iLovePDF

  • Privacy: iLovePDF uploads your PDF to its servers and deletes it automatically after 2 hours. Here nothing is ever uploaded. Your PDF and your watermark image stay on your device.
  • Watermark options: both offer text or image watermarks with font, size, colour, shadow, opacity, rotation, a position grid, mosaic, a page range and an over or below layer. This tool adds a live preview on the PDF itself.
  • Batch: iLovePDF stamps all pages when you select several PDFs. Here the page choice, such as Odd or 2-, applies to every PDF in the batch.
  • Limits: this tool needs no account, has no daily limit and adds no watermark of its own. Your device's memory is the only limit.
  • Offline: iLovePDF offers a separate desktop app for offline use. This page keeps working offline once it has loaded, and can be installed as an app from your browser.
  • What iLovePDF has that this doesn't: a large set of other PDF tools, such as merge, split and convert, plus desktop and mobile apps. This page does one job only.
  • Trade-off: here the watermark is saved as a sharp graphic rather than live text, so the watermark's own words can't be selected or searched. It looks identical everywhere in return.

How it compares with other popular PDF watermark tools

  • Smallpdf: works in the cloud and deletes files after one hour. Its Watermark tool adds text, with usage limits for free users, and it points to a separate Edit PDF tool for images. Here text and image watermarks are both free and unlimited.
  • Adobe Acrobat: its watermark tool is part of the paid Acrobat plans, and the free Reader can't add watermarks. It is a full PDF editor, which this page is not.
  • PDF24: its online watermark tool uploads your file and deletes it after one hour, and it can fill the whole page with text. Its free PDF24 Creator app works offline on Windows.
  • The main difference: these sites process your PDF on their servers, so it has to be uploaded first. Here it is processed inside your browser, which matters most for contracts, ID documents and other private files.
  • Trade-off: a cloud service does the work on its own servers, so it can handle extremely large PDFs more easily. Here, very large files depend on your device's memory and may be slow on a phone.
  • Note: these details come from each service's public information as of September 2026 and can change.
