Read Later

Instant Save Syncs across devices

You'll find a Save for Later icon and button at the top and bottom of every post. Click it to bookmark the article to your account. From the account menu, Read Later opens a pop-up listing everything you've saved, so you can jump back to it any time, from any device you log into.

You can save up to 500 article links to your account. Remove an item from the list to free up a slot.

Why use it: it's a simple, private reading list — perfect for saving an article you don't have time for right now and coming back to it later, on your phone or your computer.

Sticky Note

Stays on your device only

Open a small note box you can type into and drag anywhere on the screen. Closing it with its own × only hides it; your text is kept, so opening it again shows exactly what you last wrote.

Good to know: the Sticky Note is saved to this browser only, not to your account on our server. It's a quick scratchpad — if you clear your browser data, switch browsers, or switch devices, the note won't follow you. Use "Read Later" or "Save My Current Reading Spot" instead for anything you want to keep long-term or access elsewhere.
Why use it: handy for jotting a quick thought, a quote you want to remember, or a to-do while you're mid-article — without leaving the page or opening another app.

Save My Current Reading Spot

Saving is instant New entry after refresh

While reading any article, click Save My Current Reading Spot in the account menu to bookmark exactly how far down the page you've read. Clicking the button saves your spot right away, but the newly saved spot will only appear in your Saved Spots list the next time the page loads — you'll see a short "visible after page refresh" note when this happens.

Nothing is tracked automatically — a spot is only ever saved when you click the button yourself.

Why use it: ideal for long articles you're reading in more than one sitting — no more scrolling around trying to remember where you stopped.

Saved Spots

Syncs across devices

This lists everywhere you've used Save My Current Reading Spot, so you can jump straight back to where you left off. The most recent 20 spots are kept — older ones drop off the list as you add new ones.

Tip: pair this with Save My Current Reading Spot — save your place before you close the tab, then come back to this list from any device.

See Highlights

Instant — no refresh Syncs across devices

While logged in, select any text inside an article and a small option will appear letting you highlight it in pink or yellow. Your highlights are saved to your account and will still be there the next time you open that same article, on any device. See Highlights opens a list of everything you've marked, across every article.

Why use it: great for marking key passages, quotes, or sections you want to find again quickly, without needing to re-read the whole article.

Article Text Size

Instant — no refresh

Drag the slider to choose how large article text appears, from S (small) to XXL (extra-extra large). This changes the body text of articles only, not menus or buttons elsewhere on the site. Your choice is remembered on your account for next time.

Try it
SMLXLXXL

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

Why use it: makes long-form reading more comfortable on any screen size, and is especially useful if smaller text is hard to read.

Article Font

Instant — no refresh

Choose the typeface used for article text.

Try it

This is how article text will look in the font you pick.

  • Inter, Nunito — clean, modern sans-serif fonts
  • Georgia, Merriweather, Lora, IBM Plex Serif — traditional, book-like serif fonts, often easier for long reading
  • Atkinson Hyperlegible — a font specifically designed to be easier to read for people with low vision
Why use it: reading is personal — some people find serif fonts more comfortable for long articles, while others prefer clean sans-serif. If legibility is a concern, Atkinson Hyperlegible is worth trying.

Article Background

Instant — no refresh

Changes the background color behind the article you're reading, not the whole site. This is separate from any site-wide Dark Mode the site may offer.

Try it
A sample paragraph, so you can see how the tint sits behind article text before you choose.
Brown (Sepia)A warm, muted tone similar to a printed book or e-reader "sepia" mode — many readers find it easier on the eyes than plain white, especially in dim rooms.
Light YellowA softer, gentler alternative to white with slightly less contrast — a good middle ground if sepia feels too dark for you.

Article Layout

Instant — no refresh Laptop / desktop only

Choose whether the article text sits to the Left, Center (default), or Right of the page. This option isn't shown on phone or tablet screens, since there isn't extra width for it to make a visible difference there.

Try it
Article column

Note: on articles that have a table of contents panel down the side, your layout may shift automatically so the article never sits underneath it. This is temporary and only applies to that article — your own saved choice is unaffected and returns on the next page.

In the account panel

Fixed Bottom Menu Bar

Refreshes the page to apply

Controls the navigation bar that can appear fixed along the bottom of the screen.

Options
  • Default — follows the site's normal setting
  • On — always show the bottom bar
  • Off — always hide the bottom bar

Your choice is saved instantly, and the page then refreshes once so the change takes visible effect.

In the account panel

Fixed Top Menu Bar on Computer

Refreshes the page to apply

Controls whether the top navigation bar stays fixed at the top of the screen as you scroll down the page. Same three choices as Fixed Bottom Menu Bar: Default, On, or Off.

Options
Please note: you can stick either the top menu bar or the bottom menu bar to the screen, not both. Turning one on takes priority over the other, so pick whichever bar is more useful to you as you scroll.
Getting started

Opening the account menu

Look for the round profile icon in the corner of the site — it shows your initials once you're logged in, or a plain Login button if you're not. Click or tap it to open the panel shown on the left. You can close it again by:

  • × — clicking the close icon in the top-right of the panel
  • Clicking anywhere outside the panel
  • Pressing the Esc key on your keyboard

The same panel and the same options are available on both desktop and mobile.

Getting started

If you're not logged in

Clicking the icon simply opens a Login pop-up right on the page — you don't get sent to a separate page. Enter your username and password and submit.

Refreshes after success

Once your details are accepted, the page automatically refreshes so the site can show you as logged in — your profile icon, your saved items, your preferences, and so on.

Getting started

Your name and status

At the top of the panel you'll see a greeting with your name and your current membership status, so you can always confirm you're logged in and see where your membership stands at a glance.

More

Notification bell

Instant — no refresh

A bell icon sits beside your profile icon, just outside the account panel itself. Click it to see updates from the site — new articles you may be interested in, or messages sent to members. Opening the bell automatically marks everything inside as read.

Quick reference: instant vs. refresh
