    Pick how to split

How it works

  • Choose one or more PDFs, pick a split method, and click Split. Everything happens in your browser.
  • Every Page makes one PDF per page. Every N Pages starts a new PDF after that many pages, so a 10-page PDF split every 4 pages gives files of 4, 4 and 2 pages.
  • Custom Ranges takes entries like 1-3, 5, 8-last, plus odd and even. Each entry becomes its own PDF, or tick the box to gather them all into one.
  • By Size fills each new PDF with as many whole pages as fit under your limit, such as 10 MB for an email attachment.
  • By Bookmarks starts a new PDF at each bookmark, which suits books, reports and manuals split by chapter. Chapter titles become the file names.
  • Into N Equal Parts divides the pages evenly into the number of files you set. Half and Half does the same with two, so you never type a page number.
  • Selected Pages lets you click pages in the preview, drag a box across several, or use the quick picks. The PDF is then cut at each picked page, or the picked pages become one PDF or one PDF each.
  • Blank Pages cuts at every blank page and leaves the blank pages out, which suits a stack of documents scanned with blank sheets between them.
  • By Text starts a new PDF at each page that contains the words you type, such as Invoice No. Page Size or Orientation starts one wherever the page shape changes, such as from A4 to A3 or portrait to landscape.
  • Each new file is opened again and compared with your original before you can download it.
  • Nothing is uploaded. Once the page has loaded, it keeps working offline.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is my PDF uploaded anywhere? No. Splitting runs entirely in your browser. Your file is never sent to a server, so it stays private.
  • How can I split a PDF? Split Method lists every way, grouped by purpose. By page count: Every Page, Every N Pages, Into N Equal Parts and Half and Half. Pages you choose: Selected Pages and Custom Ranges. By content: By Bookmarks, Blank Pages, By Text and Page Size or Orientation. By file size: By Size, which fills each file up to a limit such as 10 MB.
  • What can I type in Custom Ranges? Page numbers separated by commas, such as 1-3, 5, 8-last. You can also type odd or even for every odd or even page. Each entry becomes its own PDF, or tick the box to merge them all into one PDF.
  • Can I pick the pages to split at by clicking them? Yes. Choose Selected Pages in Split Method, then click pages in the preview or drag a box across several. The PDF can be cut at each picked page, the picked pages can go into one new PDF, or each picked page can become its own PDF.
  • Will the text stay selectable and searchable? Yes. Pages are copied as they are and never converted to images, so text, photos and vector graphics stay exactly as they were.
  • Can I split several PDFs at once? Yes. Add as many PDFs as you like, and download all the new files together as a ZIP or one PDF at a time.
  • Why are my new files not smaller in total? Fonts and images shared by several pages are stored in every file that uses them, so the files added together can be a little larger than the original. Each file alone is smaller. To shrink them further, run them through a PDF compressor.
  • What happens to links, bookmarks and forms? Web links keep working. Links that jump to other pages of the original, and the bookmark panel, are not carried into the new files. Form fields keep their look but can no longer be filled in.
  • Which PDFs are not supported? Password-protected PDFs cannot be processed. Digitally signed PDFs can be split, but the new files no longer carry the signature.

What happens to your PDF

  • Pages: each page is copied exactly as it is, with the same size, rotation, text, photos and vector graphics. Nothing is re-rendered or recompressed, so quality never drops.
  • Fonts and images: every new file carries only the fonts and images its own pages use.
  • Title and author: with Keep Title & Author on, the title, author, subject and keywords are copied into every new file. Other hidden details, such as the original creator and thumbnails, are not.
  • Links: web links keep working. Links that jump to other pages of the original point to pages that are no longer there, so they are removed instead of breaking.
  • Bookmarks and forms: the bookmark panel is not copied into the new files. Form fields keep their look but can no longer be filled in.
  • By Size: the tool builds trial files, measures their real size, and adjusts until each one fits. A page that is bigger than the limit on its own becomes its own file and is flagged.
  • File names: new files are named from File Name, which is your PDF's name unless you change it, such as report-pages-01-03.pdf, with numbers padded so they sort in order. Duplicate names get -2, -3 and so on.
  • Safety check: each new file is opened again and compared with your original, covering page count, text, page size and rotation. When one PDF makes more than 12 files, an even spread of 12 is checked. If a check fails, no files are offered for that PDF.

How to get the most out of it

  • Click instead of typing. Choose Selected Pages and click the pages in the preview. With See All Pages on, you can drag a box across several at once.
  • Use “last”. Typing 5-last takes everything from page 5 to the end, whatever the length.
  • Pull pages into one PDF. Enter 1-3, 7, 10-12 and tick Merge All Ranges Into One PDF to gather them, in that order.
  • Split for email. Choose By Size and enter the attachment limit, such as 10 MB, to get files that will send.
  • Split books and reports. By Bookmarks works best when the PDF has a bookmark panel. Try level 2 to split by section instead of chapter.
  • Split scanned batches. Put a blank sheet between documents when scanning, then choose Blank Pages to get one PDF per document.
  • Split statements and invoices. Choose By Text and type a word that appears only on the first page of each one, such as Invoice No.
  • Do many at once. Add all your PDFs together and download every new file as one ZIP, sorted into folders.
  • Shrink the pieces. If the new files are still too big, run them through a PDF compressor afterwards.
  • Know the limits. Password-protected PDFs can't be split, and digitally signed PDFs lose their signature when rewritten.

How it compares with iLovePDF

  • Privacy: iLovePDF uploads your PDF to its servers and deletes it automatically after 2 hours. Here nothing is ever uploaded. Your PDF stays on your device.
  • Split methods: iLovePDF splits by custom or fixed page ranges, can merge the ranges into one PDF, and can extract pages. This tool does all of these, and adds By Size, By Bookmarks, Blank Pages, By Text and more, all free.
  • Limits: iLovePDF's free plan limits file size and usage, and its Premium plan raises them. This tool needs no account, has no daily limit and adds no watermark. Your device's memory is the only limit.
  • Offline: iLovePDF offers a separate desktop app for offline use. This page keeps working offline once it has loaded, and can be installed as an app from your browser.
  • What iLovePDF has that this doesn't: opening files from Google Drive or Dropbox, a large set of other PDF tools, and desktop and mobile apps. Both let you pick pages by clicking their thumbnails.
  • Results: both copy pages into new files without changing them, so the pages look the same. Try your own PDF to see.

How it compares with other popular PDF splitters

  • Smallpdf: works in the cloud and deletes files after one hour. Free use comes with a daily task limit, and batch features need a Pro account. Its thumbnail view lets you click the pages to keep. Here there is no limit, and batches are free.
  • Adobe Acrobat online: asks you to sign in and handles your file on Adobe's servers, and its online splitter caps a split at 20 files. Acrobat on the desktop can also split by page count, file size and top-level bookmarks. Here all three are free and unlimited in your browser.
  • PDF24: its online tool uploads your file and deletes it after one hour. It splits after a fixed number of pages, separates even and odd pages, or cuts where you click a scissors icon. Its free PDF24 Creator app works offline on Windows.
  • The main difference: these sites process your PDF on their servers, so it has to be uploaded first. Here it is processed inside your browser, which matters most for contracts, ID documents and other private files.
  • Trade-off: a cloud service does the work on its own servers, so it can handle extremely large PDFs more easily. Here, very large files depend on your device's memory and may be slow on a phone.
  • Note: these details come from each service's own website as of September 2026 and can change.
