What is Length?

Length is how far it is from one point to another: the size of an object along its longest side, or the distance between two places. It is one of the most basic things we measure. The metric system uses meters, while the US and UK also use inches, feet, yards and miles, so converting between them is a daily need in travel, building and shopping.

About Millimeters (mm)

A millimeter is one thousandth of a meter. It is the standard unit for small, precise measurements in engineering, manufacturing and everyday objects, and part of the metric system used by almost every country.

  • 1 mm = 0.1 cm = 0.001 m
  • 1 inch is exactly 25.4 mm
  • A credit card is about 0.76 mm thick

About Centimeters (cm)

A centimeter is one hundredth of a meter. It is the everyday unit for body measurements, clothing sizes and small household objects wherever the metric system is used.

  • 1 cm = 10 mm = 0.01 m
  • 1 inch is exactly 2.54 cm
  • A fingernail is roughly 1 cm wide

About Meters (m)

The meter is the base unit of length in the International System of Units (SI). Since 1983 it has been defined as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.

  • 1 m = 100 cm = 1,000 mm
  • 1 m is about 3.28 feet or 1.09 yards
  • A standard door is about 2 m tall

About Kilometers (km)

A kilometer is 1,000 meters and is the standard unit for road distances and travel in most of the world.

  • 1 km is about 0.6214 miles
  • 1 mile is about 1.609 km
  • A marathon is 42.195 km, and a 5K race is 5 km

About Inches (in)

The inch is a unit of the imperial and US customary systems. Since 1959 it has been defined as exactly 25.4 millimeters.

  • 12 inches = 1 foot, and 36 inches = 1 yard
  • 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly
  • Used for screen sizes and many tool and pipe sizes

About Feet (ft)

The foot is an imperial and US customary unit equal to exactly 0.3048 meters. It is used in the US and UK for height and short distances, and worldwide in aviation for altitude.

  • 1 ft = 12 in = 30.48 cm
  • 3 ft = 1 yard
  • Aircraft altitude is given in feet in most countries

About Yards (yd)

The yard is an imperial and US customary unit equal to exactly 0.9144 meters, or 3 feet. It is used for fabric, sports fields and some short distances.

  • 1 yd = 3 ft = 36 in
  • 1,760 yards = 1 mile
  • American football fields are measured in yards

About Miles (mi)

The mile is an imperial and US customary unit of distance, used for road distances in the US and UK. The international mile is exactly 1,609.344 meters.

  • 1 mi = 5,280 ft = 1,760 yd
  • 1 mi is about 1.609 km
  • The nautical mile (1,852 m) is a different unit used at sea and in the air
