What is Volume?

Volume is the amount of space something takes up, such as the liquid in a bottle or the capacity of a tank. The metric system measures it in liters and milliliters. The US and UK use gallons, quarts, pints and cups, and the US and UK versions of these units are not the same size, which this converter keeps apart.

About Milliliters (mL)

A milliliter is one thousandth of a liter, equal to exactly one cubic centimeter. It is used for small amounts of liquid, such as medicine, cooking and cosmetics.

  • 1 mL = 1 cm³, and 1,000 mL = 1 L
  • A teaspoon is about 5 mL
  • A can of soda is 355 mL in the US and 330 mL in many other countries

About Liters (L)

The liter is the everyday metric unit of volume, equal to 1,000 milliliters or one cubic decimeter. It is used worldwide for drinks, fuel and household liquids.

  • 1 L = 1,000 mL = 1 dm³, and 1 m³ = 1,000 L
  • 1 L is about 1.0567 US quarts
  • Most countries sell fuel by the liter

About US Gallons (gal)

The US liquid gallon is a US customary unit equal to exactly 3.785411784 liters. It is used for fuel, milk and large liquid containers in the United States.

  • 1 US gal = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups
  • 1 US gal is about 3.785 L
  • The UK gallon is larger, at 4.54609 L

About US Cups (cup)

The US customary cup is about 236.6 milliliters, or half a US pint. It is mainly used in American recipes.

  • 1 cup = 8 US fluid ounces, and 16 cups = 1 US gallon
  • The metric cup used in some countries is 250 mL
  • Cups measure volume, not weight, so a cup of flour weighs less than a cup of sugar

About US Pints (pt)

The US liquid pint is exactly 473.176473 milliliters, one eighth of a US gallon.

  • 1 pint = 2 cups = 16 US fluid ounces, and 2 pints = 1 quart
  • The UK (imperial) pint is larger, at 568.26 mL
  • A US pint glass holds 473 mL, while a UK pint of beer is 568 mL

About US Quarts (qt)

The US liquid quart is exactly 946.352946 milliliters, one quarter of a US gallon.

  • 1 quart = 2 pints = 4 cups, and 4 quarts = 1 gallon
  • Slightly less than a liter (1 qt is about 0.946 L)
  • Milk and motor oil are commonly sold by the quart in the US

About UK Gallons (gal)

The imperial gallon is a British unit equal to exactly 4.54609 liters. It is about 20% larger than the US gallon.

  • 1 imperial gal = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 160 imperial fluid ounces
  • UK fuel economy in mpg is based on this gallon
  • Now used mainly in the UK for fuel economy

About UK Pints (pt)

The imperial pint is exactly 568.26125 milliliters, one eighth of an imperial gallon.

  • 1 imperial pint = 20 imperial fluid ounces, or about 1.2 US pints
  • Draught beer and cider in UK pubs are sold in pints by law
  • 2 imperial pints = 1 imperial quart

About UK Quarts (qt)

The imperial quart is exactly 1.1365225 liters, one quarter of an imperial gallon.

  • 1 imperial quart = 2 imperial pints, or about 1.2 US quarts
  • Larger than a liter
  • 4 imperial quarts = 1 imperial gallon
