What’s great about our Data Storage Converter

Fast, accurate conversion of file and storage sizes that you can see and drag

    • Free
    • Converts bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, petabytes, kibibytes and mebibytes instantly
    • Also shows gibibytes, tebibytes and pebibytes
    • Synced sliders and type-in boxes
    • No sign-up
    • No ads
    • Works offline once loaded
    • No daily limit
  2. 01

    Choose which units to show

Use the unit names at the top to show or hide each card. Drag a name or a card’s title to rearrange them; your order is remembered in this browser, and Restore puts the original order back. The names of Gibibytes, Tebibytes and Pebibytes are there too: tick any of them, or turn on “Binary Units (KiB, MiB…)” to show them all.

  3. 02

Drag a slider or type a value

Move any slider, or type a number into its “Type Value” box, and every visible unit updates instantly. The sliders are logarithmic, so each step along a slider multiplies the value, and one slider covers very small to very large amounts.

What is Data Storage?

Data storage is how much digital information a file, drive or memory can hold. It is counted in bytes. Storage makers use decimal units (kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte based on 1,000) while operating systems often use binary units (kibibyte, mebibyte, gibibyte based on 1,024), which is why a new drive can look smaller than its label.

About Bytes (B)

A byte is eight bits and is the basic unit of digital storage. One byte holds a single character of basic text.

  • 1 byte = 8 bits
  • Larger units are 1,000 bytes apart in the decimal system (KB, MB, GB) or 1,024 apart in the binary system (KiB, MiB, GiB)
  • A 100-character text message is about 100 bytes

About Kilobytes (KB)

A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes in the decimal (SI) system used by storage makers, networks and most modern software.

  • 1 KB = 1,000 B, and 1,000 KB = 1 MB
  • In the binary system, 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes
  • A short text email is a few KB

About Megabytes (MB)

A megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes (1,000 kilobytes) in the decimal system.

  • 1 MB = 1,000 KB
  • A smartphone photo is typically 2 to 5 MB, and an MP3 song 3 to 5 MB
  • In the binary system, 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes

About Gigabytes (GB)

A gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes (1,000 megabytes). Phones, memory cards and downloads are usually measured in gigabytes.

  • 1 GB = 1,000 MB
  • A movie file is roughly 1 to 5 GB
  • In the binary system, 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes, which is why some operating systems show a drive as smaller than its advertised size

About Terabytes (TB)

A terabyte is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (1,000 gigabytes), common for hard drives and SSDs.

  • 1 TB = 1,000 GB
  • A 1 TB drive holds about 250,000 photos of 4 MB each
  • In the binary system, 1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes

About Petabytes (PB)

A petabyte is 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes (1,000 terabytes), used for data centers and large research and cloud systems.

  • 1 PB = 1,000 TB
  • Large online services store many petabytes of data
  • In the binary system, 1 PiB = 1,125,899,906,842,624 bytes

About Kibibytes (KiB)

A kibibyte is 1,024 bytes (2¹⁰). The binary prefixes kibi, mebi and gibi were defined by the IEC in the late 1990s to tell binary multiples apart from the decimal kilo, mega and giga.

  • 1 KiB = 1,024 B, or about 1.024 KB
  • 1,024 KiB = 1 MiB
  • Used by operating systems and memory specifications

About Mebibytes (MiB)

A mebibyte is 1,048,576 bytes (2²⁰), or 1,024 kibibytes.

  • 1 MiB is about 1.0486 MB
  • 1,024 MiB = 1 GiB
  • Often shown as “MB” by operating systems that count in binary

About Gibibytes (GiB)

A gibibyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes (2³⁰), or 1,024 mebibytes.

  • 1 GiB is about 1.0737 GB
  • 1,024 GiB = 1 TiB
  • Computer memory (RAM) sizes are counted in binary units

About Tebibytes (TiB)

A tebibyte is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes (2⁴⁰), or 1,024 gibibytes.

  • 1 TiB is about 1.0995 TB
  • 1,024 TiB = 1 PiB
  • A drive sold as 1 TB shows as about 931 GiB

About Pebibytes (PiB)

A pebibyte is 1,125,899,906,842,624 bytes (2⁵⁰), or 1,024 tebibytes.

  • 1 PiB is about 1.1259 PB
  • 1 PiB = 1,024 TiB
  • Used for very large storage systems
