What is Time?

Time is the measure of how long something lasts or when it happens. We split it into seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks and years. This converter changes a duration between these units, for example to see how many hours are in a week.

About Seconds (s)

The second is the SI base unit of time. It is defined by a caesium-133 atom: exactly 9,192,631,770 cycles of its radiation.

  • 60 s = 1 min, and 3,600 s = 1 hour
  • 86,400 s = 1 day
  • Atomic clocks keep time more precisely than any other measurement

About Minutes (min)

A minute is 60 seconds. It is not an SI unit, but it is accepted for use with SI and is used everywhere in daily life.

  • 60 min = 1 hour, and 1,440 min = 1 day
  • 1 min = 60 s
  • The name comes from the Latin pars minuta prima, the first small part of an hour

About Hours (h)

An hour is 60 minutes, or 3,600 seconds. Dividing the day into 24 hours goes back to ancient Egypt.

  • 24 h = 1 day, and 168 h = 1 week
  • 1 h = 60 min = 3,600 s
  • Work, travel and sleep are usually planned in hours

About Days (d)

A day is 24 hours, or 86,400 seconds, roughly the time the Earth takes to rotate once relative to the Sun.

  • 7 days = 1 week
  • The Earth’s rotation varies slightly, so leap seconds are occasionally added to keep clocks in step
  • 365.25 days make up the average year used here

About Weeks (wk)

A week is 7 days. The seven-day week has been used for thousands of years and is shared by most calendars.

  • 1 week = 168 h = 10,080 min
  • A year has about 52.18 weeks
  • ISO 8601 weeks start on Monday

About Years (yr)

This converter uses the Julian year of 365.25 days (31,557,600 seconds), the standard year in astronomy.

  • 1 yr = 365.25 days = 8,766 h
  • The Gregorian calendar year averages 365.2425 days, and the tropical year is about 365.2422 days
  • Leap years add a day (with exceptions) to keep the calendar in step with the seasons
